The extreme right is targeting school boards for a number of reasons. One of the main reasons is that school boards are responsible for making decisions about the curriculum and policies in schools, which can include issues related to diversity, inclusion, and social justice. The extreme right often opposes these efforts and sees them as a threat to their ideology and beliefs.

Additionally, the extreme right sees school boards as a way to gain political power at the local level. By targeting school boards, they can mobilize their base and influence decision-making in their communities. This can also be a way for them to approve religious charter schools and gain a foothold in the broader political arena to advance their Christian nationalist agenda.

THE CNP

The politicization of education is a nationwide effort, and the use of culture war fringe issues like CRT, LGBTQ representation, sexual health education, and book banning are part of a nationwide playbook created by the Council for National Policy (CNP) to mobilize the conservative community to join their fight for control of school boards. Individuals or groups on the extreme right mobilizing this action against school boards differ by region. Christian nationalist and far-right militant groups lead the movement in SoCal by way of “astro-turfing”. Astro-turfing is the use of fake grassroots efforts that primarily focus on influencing public opinion while being funded by corporations and political entities.
